Be the Change - Youth Summit

Reavis middle school students will end summer camp on Friday, August 7, 2009 with a youth summit and showcase event at Houston Playground Park located at 5001 S. Cottage Grove. The Summit will take place from 11:30am -1pm with community based organizations, local restaurants, and youth groups celebrating peaceful and healthy ways of living. Youth will participate in visual and performing arts workshops to develop an action plan inspired by a quote from Present Obama's inaugural speech, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for, we are the change that we seek." Students will then proclaim/perform their action plan on stage along with other inspirational speakers from the community.
The Reavis students will complete the afternoon showcasing what they have learned during summer camp; capoeira, mosaic, gardening, music production, theatre, bike safety, orion's mind, and health. Themes of peace and unity will be intertwined throughout the event to show how Reavis students are making a change in their neighborhood.
